After two and a half hours of passionate citizen testimony, with the vast majority present in support of a moratorium, the Marietta Town Board passed a one year moratorium on new or expanded livestock operations of over 1000 animal units (CAFOs) at their August 5 meeting!
Now the work begins…
Immediately, AV Roth, the owner/operator of the proposed hog CAFO said he would not respect the moratorium by waiting the year, but would go ahead and file permits anyway. Despite this, both AV and his mother have been added to the Township Workgroup tasked with providing the Town Board with objective information needed to protect the health, safety, and wellfare of the local residents!
CSP is doing everything in our power to protect the integrity of the moratorium with the county and state, and reminding the township of the basics of conflict of interest, so they can come to their senses and remove anyone with a direct financial interest from the Township Workgroup.
We are also happy to announce the launch of a new organization of locals who have united to protect their land and water: the Kickapoo Stewards!
This is a fresh group working on an incredibly important local campaign, CSP is committing considerable resources to help them every step of the way.
