New SWIGG Results Focus on Bacterial Contamination

New microbial source tracking results (the first of four rounds of testing) from the Southwest Wisconsin Groundwater and Geology (SWIGG) show that 32 of the 35 wells tested in Grant, Iowa and Lafayette Counties that previously (in early samplings) tested positive for coliform bacteria or high nitrates (above the health standard of 10mg/L) contained fecal bacteria.

Bacteria traceable to human, bovine, and swine sources were all found. Pathogens linked to serious illnesses, such as Salmonella, cryptosporidium, rotavirus group A, adenovirus, and enterovirus were found in 13 samples. Raising serious concern about
