Permitting Hog Confinements on Karst Landscapes

Tuesday, December 4th, at the Platteville Public Library, from 6:30-8pm, Grant County Rural Stewardship will be hosting a gathering in the Community Room of the Library to discuss the issues related to hog CAFOs.

Information/Assistance will be provided to anyone who might want to give oral or written testimony to the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources at a public hearing.

The WDNR has scheduled a public hearing on Tuesday, December 11th at 2pm at the Youth and Ag Building in Lancaster for “DC Kamps Rockville’s” WI Pollution Discharge Elimination Systems Permit.

This hog confinement is located at the corner of Hwy 35/61 and Co. Hwy B on the fractured limestone cap of Grant County. The application indicates they will populate the buildings with 5000 hogs 50 pounds to market weight, three times per year. They anticipate annual production of nearly 2 million gallons of manure to be spread on 431 acres of rented land near the buildings.

Screen-shot of area around spreading fields (aerial LiDAR “hillshade” data from CSP’s Karst viewer), shows hundreds of sinkholes!

If the issues of CAFO industrial agriculture and its negative impacts are important to you.

Please come out and support our Grant County neighbors at this discussion and/or the permit hearing. Every person and voice makes a difference!
